Finding a great Winter coat is rather like devouring a slice of chocolate cake – it is indulgent, necessary, and even though you’ve probably already had one – you’d still rather like another! Whilst we often claim woe at central heating, and bulk-buying Lemsip, I rather believe that we all let out an inaudible yelp of excitement at the prospect of a new Winter coat which comes with the change of the seasons. The Winter coat’s uses are exhaustless and its style-saving properties enormous; read on below for my go-to guide for the top three coat styles this Autumn/Winter:
1 – The Crombie. Slim, minimalist and with a nod to chic androgyny. Small lapels and a hem which hits mid-lower thigh characterise the Crombie. Good over suits for work, as much as with a faux-fur stole for evening, or a glorious hunk of knitwear for a weekend stroll. Look to Zara and Warehouse for excellent designer interpretations.
2 – The Block Color. Life is too short to wear black coats only. Pick your most flattering hue and wear it with pride; it will instantly lift your complexion and guarantee compliments in abundance. Cocoon shapes – where the waist juts out slightly and then pulls in slimmer around the legs -are particularly slimming when paired with jeans or slim-fit trousers. Please no double breasted styles, they tend to look cheap. Max Mara and Jaeger do some of the best block colors around.
3 – The Maxi. A style much loved by elegant women and Royals the world over, the maxi coat has made somewhat of a come-back this season in tapered silhouettes which scream sophistication and refined glamour. A belted style is mandatory so as to avoid swamping. A cashmere mix version will see you through years to come; or try Jigsaw for its scrumptious velvet take on the maxi.
With so many delightful coats to chose from; can we really ever only have one slice?!
